31st COMMEMORATION OF THE 1994 GENOCIDE AGAINST THE TUTSI – KWIBUKA31 IN WARSAW
Today, the Embassy of Rwanda in Poland and Rwandan community in Poland were joined by Polish government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, academia, the Polish business community and friends of Rwanda for the 31st Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda “Kwibuka31”.
During the event, various dignitaries delivered speeches of solidarity, underscoring the importance of remembering the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They emphasized that commemorating this tragic chapter provides an opportunity to honor the lives of over one million innocent victims who were brutally murdered within just 100 days, and to reaffirm a collective commitment to preventing such atrocities from ever happening again.
In her remarks on behalf of the Government of Poland, Hon. Anna RADWAN, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland, emphasized that Kwibuka31-remembering is the first step to building mechanisms that will safeguard our nations and societies against being divided by hatred ever again. She condemned the prevailing threats of ethic-based hatred that are still looming around the world.
In his keynote address, Ambassador of Rwanda to Poland, Prof. Anastase Shyaka, traced the roots of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi to the divisive policies introduced in Rwanda during the colonial era. He highlighted the crucial role that unity and resilience and home grown solutions, particularly Gacaca, have played in Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery and nation-rebuilding. He concluded by reiterating the need to collectively recall the International Community duty to stand against all divisive politics and reaffirming Rwanda’s steadfast commitment to ensuring that Never Again is not just a slogan, but a lived reality for today and future generations
