KWIBUKA32 IN WARSAW, POLAND
Today, the Embassy of Rwanda to Poland, in collaboration with RCA-Poland, organized and hosted the 32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi (Kwibuka32) in Warsaw, Poland.
The event brought together Polish government officials, members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Poland, business leaders, university rectors and senior academics, as well as members of the Rwandan community in Poland.
The event featured the speech of the Chairman of the Rwandan community from Poland Armand NGARAMBE and messages of solidarity delivered by distinguished guests, including Hon. Gabriela Morawska, Polish Senator; Prof. Michał Zasada, Rector of Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) and Vice-President of the Conference of Polish Universities’ Rectors (CRASP); Dr. Aleksandra Cholewa, Director of Investment & Development at Luma Holding Ltd; and Sister Angelica Jose of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters Servants of the Cross (Warsaw & Kibeho).
In remarks delivered on behalf of the Government of Poland, Mr. Maciej Fałkowski, Director at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that Rwanda and Poland are united by the memory of unimaginable loss. He stressed the shared responsibility to ensure that such tragedies never happen again, noting that Kwibuka serves as a foundation for safeguarding societies against hatred.
In his keynote address, Ambassador Prof. Anastase Shyaka expressed appreciation to all participants for their solidarity during Kwibuka32. He paid tribute to individuals who, despite the indifference of the international community, stood for truth and humanity, including Father Stanisław Urbaniak, recognized as Umurinzi w’Igihango.
He further highlighted the continued shortcomings of the international community, particularly the failure to uphold the UN principle of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in the face of ongoing persecution of Kinyarwanda-speaking communities, including Tutsis and Banyamulenge, in Eastern DRC. He also underscored the failure to neutralize genocidal forces such as the FDLR, which continue to spread genocide ideology in the region.
